Choosing the Right Kitchen Accessories – A Cabinet Maker’s View from Darwin

After working on kitchens around Darwin for many years, one thing I’ve noticed is this:
a kitchen doesn’t work well just because it looks nice. What really makes the difference is how the accessories are planned inside the cabinets.

A lot of clients focus on colours, doors, or benchtops first — which is normal — but the way drawers and storage are set up will affect how you use your kitchen every single day.

Here are a few simple things I usually explain to homeowners when we design a kitchen at ASAP Cabinetry.

Start with how you actually use your kitchen

Everyone cooks differently.

Some people cook every day, some only on weekends. Some use a lot of pots and pans, others mostly air fry or reheat food. Before choosing any accessories, I always ask:

  • What do you use most often?

  • What annoys you about your current kitchen?

  • What do you wish was easier to reach?

There’s no “one perfect setup” — the right layout depends on your habits.

Put things where you actually use them

This sounds obvious, but it’s one of the most common mistakes.

  • Spices, oils and utensils should be close to the cooktop

  • Pots and pans work best in deep drawers underneath

  • Bins should be near the sink

  • Cleaning products should stay together under the sink

  • Heavy items go down low, lighter ones up high

When everything is placed logically, cooking feels smoother and less messy.

Good storage makes small kitchens feel bigger

Many Darwin homes don’t have huge kitchens, and that’s totally fine. With the right internal layout, even a small kitchen can feel very functional.

Drawer systems, pull-outs and proper dividers help:

  • reduce clutter

  • keep benches clear

  • make better use of cabinet space

You don’t always need more cabinets — just smarter ones.

Keep it simple and practical

Not every fancy accessory is necessary. Some look great in showrooms but don’t get used much in real life.

From experience, the best kitchens are:

  • simple

  • easy to clean

  • easy to access

  • built around daily routines

A clean internal layout usually looks better on the outside too.
